![]() Others picture realities where women are further stripped of their bodily autonomy. Some imagine worlds in which gender is fluid, and not nearly as limiting as it is in our own. Much like Atwood, every author on this list draws from the reality of sexism around them to create new futures. ![]() When Atwood wrote The Handmaid's Tale back in the 1980s, she was adamant that all the so-called "sci-fi" in her novel was rooted firmly in real life atrocities committed against women (fun!). But Atwood is far from the only sci-fi author to make the genre unapologetically feminist: here are a few other feminist sci-fi reads, for when you're done re-reading The Handmaid's Tale for the umpteenth time. ![]() ![]() and, as with all good science fiction, it's making us feel all weird and uncomfortable about the present. Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel imagines a future in which women are forced into sexual slavery. Between the recent TV adaption and the actual state of sexism in the world right now, The Handmaid's Tale is back on everyone's mind. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But for me I associate 80s zombies with the time of excess. I definitely don’t recommend it for children at all and it has more impact I think as an adult where the themes on consumerism have more meaning. I wasn’t terrified but it was weird, strange and compelling. Zombies I associate with the 80s for a very easy reason as at a very young age my slightly laissez-faire uncle thought it would be useful to show me a VHS copy of the Dawn of the Dead. Somehow holding onto their identities amid the mindless monsters, Scorlenski and his squad of zombie commandos set out to return to Russia. and awaken to a city overwhelmed by the walking dead, even now spreading across the globe. When Vadim Scorlenski and his elite Spetznaz squad are sent to New York at the height of the Cold War, they're told it's a 'training exercise.' They discover, too late, that the 'practice' chemical weapon they're carrying is all too real. Price – £9.99 paperback £4.99 Kindle ebook I would like to thank Hanna from rebellion for an advance copy of this novel in exchange for a fair and honest review ![]() ![]() ![]() "You will not be disappointed when reading Lessons in Love by Charlie Cochrane. Warning: Contains sensual m/m lovemaking and men in punts. Asked by the police to serve as their eyes and ears within the college, Jonty and Orlando risk exposing a love affair that could make them the killer's next target. All the victims have one thing in common: a penchant for men. Before long their friendship blossoms into more than either man had hoped. He strikes up an alliance with Jonty and soon finds himself heart-deep in feelings he's never experienced. Orlando is a brilliant, introverted mathematician with very little experience of life outside the university walls. He also has a catalytic effect on Orlando Coppersmith. ![]() When he takes up a teaching post at the college where he studied, his dynamic style acts as an agent for change within the archaic institution. How did your degree in History contribute to the creation of the political environment we see in The Selection series? I'm so happy I did! It's made so many people happy! I thought what I was working on was good enough that it might be worth sharing. It gave me a lot of positive mental space, and I knew I wanted to keep going. The end goal was being a stay-at-home mother, but after going through some difficult times, I started writing as a form of therapy. Running had become my new pastime five weeks ago, after I’d read how my body is the “temple of my soul.” Healthy temple: check. I could tell I was going to regret getting it since page one. ![]() Sweet Evil is the most idiotic book I’ve read this year. However, that doesn’t mean it makes it less painful. The first couple of stories really demonstrate the breadth of his ego. I picked up this collection to get a better understanding of the Beast Lord of Atlanta, and while I did get to see another side of him, I also got to see that he truly is full of himself, no surprise there. I’d been hoping there would be more stories about life at the Keep, instead many of the stories are about how Curran sees Kate. To me though, the writing or rather the world seen through Curran’s eyes isn’t as interesting or nuanced or unpredictable as Kate’s, but what is interesting is seeing “behind the scenes”power struggles unfolding at the Keep, which Kate isn’t privy to. ![]() The overall impression I got is too much telling and not enough showing, which is characteristic of Curran’s lion-king personality. ![]() Ive been looking forward to reading this compilation and waited until I finished Magic. Curran POV Collection by Gordon Andrews My rating: 4 of 5 stars. ![]() This book is a collection of short stories told from Curran’s POV, hence the title, and the stories included are chronological from Magic Bites (#1) to Magic Bleeds (#4). He could grow up to be a lifesaving doctor (or perhaps the antichrist.) What about that scientist burning the midnight oil? He could be working on a bug zapper (or a doomsday device.) The story of the gene begins in earnest in an obscure Augustinian abbey in Moravia in 1856 where Gregor Mendel, a monk working with pea plants, stumbles on the idea of a "unit of heredity."
